About Chevy Chase At Home
How We Started
The Village movement started in Beacon Hill, Boston in 2002. Seniors wanted to get together and create a model of support that did not focus on a single issue, such as housing, medical care or social activities. They wanted to be active in caring for themselves rather than being "taken care of".
Just over ten years ago, Naomi Kaminsky and Joan Urban introduced the Village concept to Chevy Chase neighbors and friends and started Chevy Chase At Home. Since then operations have evolved from kitchen table, to garage, to a small office. Dedicated volunteers still manage and lead this small community-based program with 2 part-time staff.
There are now approximately 75 villages in the region. Of these, 18 are in Washington DC, 40 in Maryland, 16 in Virginia. Each village is managed and run independently of the others. No village operates exactly as another.
